TRANSCRIPT: The Director’s Chair (January 2020)

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a transcript of segments from The Director’s Chair, which originally was published/emailed to OSDA coaches on January 20, 2020.

Dear OSDA Coach:

Happy 2020! I wanted to use this month’s letter to encourage you to participate in nominating students for scholarships, ask you for help with a new initiative that takes our mission beyond the scope of the OSDA, and remind you of District Finals protocols.

CSM Excellence in Critical Thinking Scholarships

As I wrote back in November, supporters of the Christian Science Monitor are funding eight $500 scholarships for the next three years to recognize excellence in critical thinking for our students who engage in evidence-based speaking and debating. Students in IS, OO, USX, IX, Policy, PF, LD, and Congressional Debate will be eligible to receive the award. District chairs and tournament hosts have been publicizing the scholarship at recent tournaments; however, we have not received enough nominations to cover each of the eight events.

Please encourage your judges and fellow coaches to nominate students for this scholarship. You may find information and the nomination form on the OSDA HS Judging webpage.

Lebanon Correctional Institution Academy

Julie Busby, a volunteer at the Lebanon Correctional Institution, which is located between Dayton and Cincinnati, is interested in starting a debate program as part of a learning academy for a select number of inmates. Specifically, she would like help creating a four-month curriculum modeled after the Bard Prison Initiative, whose team made national news when they beat Harvard.

After spending some time researching prison debate programs, corresponding with the director of Bard’s program, and speaking with debate coaches at the Sylvania tournament, I discovered that there are current debate initiatives in Ohio. In fact, Peter Paik was the guest speaker at a debate event at the Lake Erie Correctional Institute. I also discovered that Bard uses World Schools Debate as a model for their curriculum and competitions. Finally, I discovered that inmates who participate in academic programs like the BPI have a far lower recidivism rate, which should surprise none of us.

If you have any suggestions for curriculum development or for teaching debate and communication skills to a group with limited resources (no Internet use and one class per week), please contact me.

District Finals

It’s hard to believe that we’ve turned the corner on another season and that District Finals are a mere two weeks away! Now that this realization has set in, here are some administrative reminders to help make the experience a smooth one:
  • Register for District Finals in SpeechWire through the invitation sent by your district chair.
  • Familiarize yourself with district tournament rules, which begin on p. 11 of the TOM.
  • You may register up to four entries per event; however, remember that BQS and PDQ entries count toward this ratio.
  • There are no double entries at Districts.
  • Your judges must meet the qualifications listed on p. 11 of the TOM.
  • Consult the CEM for script rules and make sure your students follow them. State qualifiers in INFO and OO will submit scripts and cover sheets to the OSDA.
  • New School Grant teams do not have to pay District Finals registration fees; however, teams receiving OSDA membership fee waivers do.
  • Contact your District Chair or Treasurer for specific payment information (fees, deadlines, forms of payment).

Thanks for your attention and cooperation. I look forward to another great year of speaking!

Sincerely,

Paul Moffitt

Executive Director

REMINDERS FOR ALL!

DEBATERS are allowed to use internet in-rounds for evidence and research! They cannot communicate with others outside of the round, but they ARE able to access the internet for research.

COACHES should be the only ones with access to and management of Speechwire accounts. Students should not be able to access or manage team accounts.

The “Coach in Charge” feature of Speechwire should designate the school-approved individual who is attending the tournament and who is responsible for the team. Remember that your team cannot compete without a coach in attendance!

Students cannot use the same selection they used even once in any previous year.

Please ensure that you have familiarized yourself with our governing documents. If you have questions about anything, please reach out! We are here to help, and we want everyone to have a great competitive experience!
